Cougars? star strikers back in action
Devonshire Cougars strikers Heys Wolfe and Raymond Beach have received the green light to resume their football careers ? at least until Bermuda Football Association get their emergency disciplinary committee?s procedures ratified by affiliates at a future congress meeting.
But for the time being, the two players ? arguably the Premier Division?s most potent attacking duo ? can rejoin their team-mates on the pitch, starting tomorrow at St.John?s Field when Cougars take on the might of defending league champions Dandy Town in the day?s top match.
Officials at Devonshire Rec. had contended all along that the association?s emergency committee ? which initially banned the pair ? had infringed upon the players? rights during the disciplinary hearing process.
It is understood the two players were never ?formally? charged prior to the hearing.
BFA and Devonshire officials met again yesterday with members of a Ministry of Youth and Sport Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) arbitration tribunal to finally ?clarify? two points of a ruling which ultimately paved the way for the two Cougars to resume playing.
?The suspension against the two players has been lifted immediately,? confirmed BFA president Larry Mussenden yesterday. ?And the emergency committee and the powers contained within that committee must have its procedures ratified by the BFA affiliates. Once the emergency committee is ratified, then the two players must reappear before the emergency committee again for the matter to be heard.?
Although the BFA chief could not provide a specific date for the new hearing, Mussenden did confirm that the ratifying process for such procedures could only take place at a congress meeting and not necessarily at the association?s next Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The agenda for the next AGM has already been set and so it could be some time before Beach and Wolfe reappear before the emergency committee, said Mussenden.
?That could be a long way down the road but at this point we have been bound over (by the ADR?s final ruling) to follow and we will have to make the right decisions in due course,? he added.
?The BFA did follow the policies and procedures that we have in place but it appears the tribunal have identified an area which we now need to revisit.?
Meanwhile, Devonshire Recreation Club secretary, Ellsworth Christopher, said his club were ?justified? in taking the matter all the way to the ADR.
?My main aim was to see that we arrived at a conclusion which was beneficial to football as a whole and to my club in particular,? said Christopher.
?I think we have reached understanding in the first instance and maybe this thing will have to be revisited. But I hope as the time goes by we all can come to some sort of understanding about the situation. It?s a situation that should not have happened. But it did happen and the fellows have paid a penalty.
?I think we were justified in what we did. It wasn?t done with any malice or anything like that. We were just questioning.?
Both players had originally been banned until January 1, 2005, for their involvement in a heated verbal spat with former national coach Kenny Thompson and BFA second vice-president Gregory Grimes at the National Sports Centre in February of this year.
Senior Devonshire officials had taken their case to the ADR after a BFA appeals committee had upheld the emergency committee?s initial ruling.
Now, Beach and Wolfe are almost certain to lead Cougars? attack against Premier Division joint leaders Hornets in what promises to be yet another exciting contest between the top two urban clubs.
Elsewhere tomorrow, Somerset Trojans host Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club while PHC continue their search for a first win of the season against North Village at Southampton Oval.
Boulevard and Somerset Eagles are due to see action tonight at BAA Field beginning at 9 p.m. That match is to be preceded by the First Division contest involving Devonshire Colts and St.George?s Colts which kicks off at 7 p.m.
The weekend?s remaining First Division fixtures see Hamilton Parish host league leaders Ireland Rangers at Lords, Paget welcome Social Club at White Hill Field and Wolves entertain winless X Roads at Devonshire Rec. St.David?s and Prospect will square off at Lords in the second match of a double header.
