Couper romps to CAC gold

Gold medal at the CAC Track and Field Championships.

Middle distance runner Ashley Couper will go to the Pan-Am Games fired up after romping to golden glory at the CAC Track and Field Championships.

The Island athlete grabbed the 1,500 metre gold medal at the meet in St. George's, Grenada on Sunday night, leading the field home in a time of four minutes and 26 seconds.

It was not close to her best time for the distance but was enough to put paid to her competition.

Couper, who is based in California and runs for the Nike Farm team, faced a challenge from a Mexican runner but left her in her wake with about 800 metres remaining.

Along with Nike team-mate and compatriot Tamika Williams, Couper will travel to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic at the beginning of next month for the Pan Ams - her primary focus for this season.

She was travelling back to Bermuda with her mother Peggy last night and was not available for comment.
