Couples vie for Classic title

The annual Pompano Couple's Golf Classic teed off yesterday at Belmont Hills, boasting a field of 22 teams ? all from overseas.

The tournament, which is entering its fourth year and is played over three rounds on different courses, was played under a two-ball better-ball format yesterday.

In the team net division, defending champions Fran and Margaret Muldoon from Derbyshire, England made a great start to the defence of their title by firing a superb round of 59 (eleven under par).

Newcomers Dennis and Debora Gaber from Barbonia, New York are also in the hunt after a fine 61 (-9) ? though it looks as if the net division will remain close and go down to the last day as more than half the field were under par and in contention for the title.

In the gross division, defending champions Cathy and Dick Caverly from Stoughton, Massachusetts recorded a 77 ? five back from newcomers Robert Dziak and Carrie Easton from Royersford, Pennsylvania who turned in a fine three-over 73.

Tied for second also seven-over are Stanley and Jean Rospondex from Cinnaminson, New Jersey.

The Classic continues today at Riddell's Bay and finishes tomorrow at Port Royal.
