Cowen coasts to win in Trunk Island Swim

A total of 191 swimmers lined up in nearly perfect conditions on Sunday for the annual Trunk Island Swim, a 1,325 metre open water swim in Harrington Sound organised by Triangle Swim Club.

Fresh from his success in the Commonwealth Games, Ronald Cowen was in a class of his own and cruised to victory in a time of 17:30, outside his winning time of 16:47 last year, but more than a minute and 17 seconds ahead of second place finisher, visitor David Griffis, who finished in a time of 18:47.

In an impressive display of swimming prowess, Joelle Jeans, a 14-year old visitor from the Amersham Swim Club in the UK, was third overall and the first female to finish in a time of 18:56.

Second female across the line was last year's winner, Belinda Castree, who was some nine seconds behind Jeans, while third female overall was 13-year old Jenifer Howard, also visiting from the UK, in a time of 20:09.

In fact, the girls' 13 to 14 age group proved to be the most competitive age group by far, with four girls placing in the top 15 swimmers overall, and only 11 seconds separating the second, third and fourth spots of the age group.

In other age groups, Emily Nagel won the girls' eight and under in a time of 44:07, while Nicole Yearwood won the girls' nine to ten in an impressive time of 24:31.

Katie Ambridge, also visiting from the UK, was the fourth female to finish overall and captured the girls' 11 to 12 title in an outstanding time of 20:11.

In addition to her first overall female title, Joelle Jeans captured the girls' 13 to 14 title, while local Alex Jones won the girls' 15 to 19 age group in a time of 22:38.

Belinda Castree was the winner of the women's 20 to 29 title, while Annette Budge captured the women's 30 to 39 category in a time of 21:29.

In the masters categories, Alice Mastalir won the women's 40-49 age group, while Marianne Herbert captured the women's 50 and over title.

In the boy's groups, visitor Edward Howard from the UK captured the boy's nine to ten group, while well-known local swimmer Matthew Tavares captured the boy's 11 to 12 group in an impressive time of 21:16.

Local Khamari Greaves was the winner of the boy's 13 to 14 age group, and visitor David Griffis picked up the boy's 15 to 19 group with his second place overall finish.

In addition to capturing the overall title, Cowen won the men's 20 to 29 age group, while Shaun Wilson captured the men's 30 to 39 category in a time of 20:49.

In the masters categories, well-known local distance swimmer Reeve Trott captured the men's 40 to 49 age group, while local Peter Weedon took the men's 50 and over title.

Swimmers who did not receive their certificates after the event can collect them from Sportseller before September 3.
