Cricket suffers soggy Sunday
Rain wreaked havoc across cricket's Premier and First Division schedule yesterday with not a single match completed.
The potential First Division championship decider between landlords St.George's and tenants Cleveland was abandoned at Wellington Oval late in the afternoon following persistent rain, leaving the race for the title wide open.
An under-strength St.George's won the toss and sent Cleveland in to bat on a hardened, grassy strip.
Cleveland were poised at 74 for three when rain halted play for the first time for one hour and 16 minutes, forcing umpires Roger Dill and Wilbur Pitcher to reduce the match to a 43-over affair when play eventually resumed at 1.20 p.m..
However, another downpour halted proceedings for good at 2.01 p.m. with Cleveland on 117 for the loss of four wickets.
It was at this juncture the umpires decided to reduce the match to a 25-over contest and take early tea, leaving St.George's to chase 94 runs for victory in 20 overs.
But returning showers prevented St.George's from taking to the crease, and at 5.15 p.m. the umpires officially abandoned the match to leave both clubs tied on 16 points at the top of the standings.
Steven Douglas jr had led the Cleveland batting with 27 followed by Shaki Darrell who added 20.
St.George's' player/coach George Cannonier spearheaded his team's bowling with three for 24.
Meanwhile, the only other matches to get underway yesterday were Premier Division clashes at Lords and Sea Breeze Oval featuring Flatts and Somerset Cricket Club and Bailey's Bay and Warwick.
At Lords, Somerset piled up 231 for seven in their allotted 50 overs thanks to a fine unbeaten knock of 78 from the bat of veteran all-rounder Wendell White.
White struck five fours and three sixes and remained undefeated at the crease when Somerset's innings came to an end at 2.50 p.m.
However, rain prevented any further play while at nearby Sea Breeze Oval visitors Warwick were 49 for two when rain halted play for the day.
The remaining Premier Division matches involving defending league champions Southampton Rangers and St.David's at Southampton Oval, and Western Stars and Social Club at St.John's Field, never got underway.
Yesterday's weather also put paid to First Division matches involving Somerset Bridge and Police at White Hill Field and Central Counties champions Devonshire and PHC at Devonshire Rec.
