Cricketer Hollis in a spin over match ban
Top spinner Del Hollis was last night fighting to have an appeal against a two-game ban heard in order to be considered by St. David's for their Eastern Counties Cup final against Bailey Bay at Sea Breeze Oval on Saturday.
The player was penalised after being involved in an incident following the second round of the Eastern Counties at Sea Breeze Oval on August 10.
Hollis has one game remaining of the suspension after sitting out last Sunday's Premier Division game against champions Western Stars at St. John's Field. Now the player is eager to have his appeal hearing take place prior to the selection of the team tomorrow night for obvious reasons.
Club president Wilbur Pitcher confirmed that a club meeting involving cricketers was on the cards last night, but said that he was unaware of the actual details because matters concerning team discipline was dealt with by a special committee.
He was unable to say what was on the agenda schedule for last night.
Sports chairman Delby Borden, while refusing to shed any light on the incident leading to the ban, did however confirm that an incident involving the player did occur at that particular match and that the player was scheduled to appear before an appeal committee soon.
"What happened is something we considered to be internal, but I can confirm that Del Hollis was suspended for two games following a cricket incident during the last county game,'' said sports chairman Delby Borden.
"The player has appealed and will face the committee concerned shortly, but I don't know when the meeting will be. He has served one game already and has one more to stick it out.''
If Hollis' appeal is not heard or if it is turned down St. David's will be forced to defend their championship in the final without their prime spinner.
He almost single-handedly destroyed Flatts in the previous round by spearheading St. David's to a whopping 176-run victory, taking six wickets for 26 runs off eight overs, including two maidens.
Skipper Clay Smith could not be reached yesterday for comment.
