Crockwell, Furbert lead the way
Josh Crockwell and Jamin Furbert led Saltus Grammar School to a 2-2 record on their annual basketball tour of Toronto.
Crockwell poured in 45 points, pulled down 25 rebounds and had 16 steals, while Furbert chipped in with an equally impressive 35 points and 26 rebounds during the Pembroke school?s four-match trip to the land of the NBA?s Toronto Raptors.
A brave second-half comeback saw Saltus erase a 14-point deficit and come to within a single bucket of taking the lead with 30 seconds remaining on the clock in their opening tour match against Holy Trinity School.
But the Bermuda team ultimately came up short as the hosts grabbed a rebound and protected the ball until time expired.
Crockwell led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds followed by Ade Brown who scored 13.
Saltus bounced back in their second match against Hillfield-Strathallen College, taking the lead from the opening tip-off and cruising all the way to comfortable 43-30 win.
Furbert led the way this time, scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Having watched the Raptors defeat the LA Lakers the night before at the Air Canada Centre, an inspired Saltus picked up their second straight victory with Crockwell and Furbert again prominent.
Crockwell enjoyed a team-high 15 points while Furbert contributed ten and had six rebounds in his team?s 42-34 win over Ridley College in Niagara.
But the Saltus win streak came to a grinding halt in their final match against a physical Ajax Bears who powered their way to a convincing 39-52 win.
Furbert was the top scorer for Saltus with nine points and had nine rebounds.
Saltus teacher Jon Beard described the tour as a ?success?.
?They surpassed expectations. The team have only had one starter from last year, and so we really weren?t expecting too much from them this season,? he said.
?But as it is they?ve actually done quite well.
?We beat the two private schools (Hillfield-Strathallen and Ridley College) we played, lost narrowly to a public school (Holy Trinity) and were beaten by a club team (Ajax Bears).
?But overall it was a great experience for the kids who all had a great time.?
