Cross happy with Fed Cup display
Thirteen-year-old Cayla Cross was the outstanding athlete in this year's junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup competition in Guatemala.
The youngster who still has two more years of eligibility in the event, helped her team to an eighth place overall finish out of nine teams, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the singles against Costa Rica.
Although Caitlin Gordon was beaten 6-1, 6-2 in her singles rubber, a 6-3, 6-3 doubles victory alongside Danielle Furbert lifted Bermuda off the bottom of the table on the event's final day.
Cross won two of her four matches in straight sets including a victory over a Honduran opponent, whose team were seeded three in the competition.
The boys went down 3-0 to Aruba with Na'im Azhar losing 6-2, 6-4, Drew Burnett-Herkes going down 6-1, 6-4 and the pair losing in the doubles 6-1, 6-1. Overall, Bermuda finished last among the nine teams. The tournament finished on Saturday with the host country Guatemala winning both events.
