Cross shines in Caribbean

Cayla Cross, the only girl representing Bermuda in the International Tennis Federation?s Developmental Championship in Trinidad, has played her way into the main draw.

Cross, Bermuda?s 14 and under top ranked player, qualified by winning the most games in her group.

Yesterday she was scheduled to play her first match in the main draw.

Bermuda?s other representatives at the ITF 14 and Under Caribbean tournament, Jack Keyes and Alexander Cooper, were scheduled to play in the consolation draw.

Keyes went down to all the players in his group. He was defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (2) by Brian Oldfield of the US Virgin Islands and 0-6,1-6 by Darian King of Barbados and finally 3-6,0-6 by Kohei Toshihara of St. Vincent.

Of his first match, national coach Brent Smith, who has accompanied the team to Trinidad said: ?Jack played really well, taking his first opponent to a third set tie-breaker. His second and third matches were against really tough opponents who attacked relentlessly.?

Team-mate Cooper won one of his three qualifying matches. He defeated Corey Wilson of Granada 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5). But he lost against Jovani Lewis of Trinidad 3-6, 3-6 and against Gian Issa, of Suriname, 3-6, 0-6.

Of his win against Wilson, Smith said: ?The first set saw Alex dominating and playing very aggressively. In the second set, Corey slowed it down which caused Alex to stop moving his feet and therefore increased his errors. In the tiebreaker, Alex came out and pumped and pulled through to win.?

The team are sponsored by local law firm Appleby, Spurling and Hunter and Emerald Financial and funded by the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association.

Trials took place in October and final selection was based on national ranking and trial matches.

This marks the third consecutive year that Cross has been selected to represent Bermuda in the championships.
