Cup euphoria ? ?you can?t beat it? say former stars
Only those privileged to have been on a victorious FA Cup-winning team can describe the euphoria associated with hoisting one of local football?s most coveted showpieces.
In 1980, PHC Zebras? midfielder Cecil Robinson won his very first FA Cup, the same year the Zebras were relegated to the First Division.
No other club has experienced that ?double? since.
?We were all upset we did get relegated, but that was my first FA Cup and so I was happy that we won it,? recalled Robinson, whose son Cecoy currently plays for Zebras.
PHC defeated Warwick United 4-1 at the former National Stadium.
A year later Vasco Da Gama would hand Somerset Trojans ? making their eighth FA Cup final appearance ? their first defeat in the prestigious competition.
?It is really hard to describe winning the FA Cup at Vasco,? said two-goal hero Clevie Wade. ?Somerset were the favourites and we were only making our first appearance in the FA Cup. We were really up for the game that day and seemed to want it more than they did.?
Vasco won the match 3-1 and then successfully defended their title the next year via a 3-1 win over PHC.
Wade would win a third FA Cup title at Dandy Town in 1986-87, scoring the winner against Zebras in a replay at BAA Field.
Trojans? Dennis Brown recalls losing to Vasco in his debut season of senior football.
?It was very disappointing. Having made it to the final we were looking forward to winning the cup, but a referee?s decision (penalty) near the end took it away from us,? he said.
Brown would eventually savour cup success seven years later as skipper of the Trojans side that defeated Devonshire Colts 2-1 in a replay.
?I can?t even put it in words what it meant to me not only to win a first FA Cup, but also to do it as captain of the team,? he said. ?It was good for the community at the time and nothing but elation.?
Brown would win another FA Cup in 1990.
In 1977-78, Ralph (Gumbo) Bean won a first FA Cup with North Village who defeated Zebras 3-1 in the final.
?That was a huge achievement for us to win a first FA Cup, especially since we always ended up being bridesmaids,? he said. ?The feeling is out of this world, you become so overwhelmed by winning the FA Cup.?
Bean also won a FA Cup winners? medal at Vasco in 1981.
In 1972-73 Edgar (Dillie Dick) Smith savoured FA Cup glory with Devonshire Colts.
?It was an awesome achievement. It wasn?t like winning the league, but it was an memorable moment,? he said.
Colts defeated PHC 2-1 in a replay to win their first ever FA Cup.
?There?s no doubt about it, it was definitely one of the highlights of my career,? Smith added.
Smith, who went on to make a name for himself at Southampton Rangers, sat out Rangers? 1984 FA Cup triumph through suspension.
