Cup stakes high as Town look to topple champs

With one eye firmly focused on a first league title since 2001, Dandy Town switch their attention this weekend to the other jewel which has eluded them for the past 17 years ? the FA Cup.

But wedged between them and a passage through to the quarter-finals are two-time defending champions North Village.

Town handed Village a 2-1 loss last November at St. John?s Field, the venue for tomorrow?s top match of the day, during the teams? sole meeting this season.

And with so much more now at stake for both clubs, tomorrow?s action promises to be intense as Town continue their re-emergence from the shadows of their cross-town rivals who have reached every FA Cup final in the new millennium.

Hornets last won the FA Cup in 1986-87, overcoming PHC Zebras 1-0 in a replay. Striker Carlos Smith is the only Town player still active from that cup-winning team.

Village, meanwhile, bumped Hornets out of last year?s competition in the quarter-finals.

?Ideally, everybody says they want to play against a so-called weaker team. But in today?s game the parity is so great, I don?t think there?s such a thing,? said Town coach, Devarr Boyles.

?I think North Village present a good challenge and a good test for us and hopefully on the day we can get the job done.?

Irate following his team?s scoreless draw against Boulevard last weekend, Boyles later described that sub-par performance as ?probably the worst? he had seen all seasonHe is also mindful his charges can ill-afford to repeat that disappointing form against the cup holders.

?We didn?t play our normal game last Sunday. The two facets of the game which concerned me most was our players? lack of concentration and poor technique,? he said.

The fact Town are playing at home comes with its share of ?advantages? and ?disadvantages?, explained Boyles.

?Our pitch, as everyone knows, isn?t the greatest . . . but it is home.?

Tomorrow?s top clash will be preceded by the women?s FA Cup contest between Dandy Stars and Somerset Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, in what also promises to be an electrifying affair, Somerset Trojans and Somerset Eagles will renew their fierce rivalry in an all-West End derby at White Hill Field. It will be the third successive year that these two clubs have met in the FA Cup, with the series tied at one win apiece.

Trojans have encountered little difficulty disposing of teams in the First Division and tomorrow?s clash against Eagles will be their biggest test to date.

Eagles, on the other hand, have demonstrated indifferent form this season but can never be counted out when it comes to cup competitions as they proved to Town earlier this month in the Friendship Trophy ? a competition in which they finished runners-up last season.

But given they have competed against higher quality opposition all season, Eagles go into this contest as favourites to avenge last season?s 4-1 cup defeat to Trojans and advance into the next round of the competition for the first time since 2001-02.

?Definitely, we are going into this match as the underdog. We are the First Division team and they are the Premier Division team and so basically going into the match we don?t have anything to prove or anything to lose. We just have to go out there relaxed and play football like we know we can,? said Trojans coach Dennis Brown, downplaying the enormity of tomorrow?s derby.

The Eagles/Trojans clash will be preceded by the contest between 2000-01 champions Devonshire Colts and Commercial League team Tuff Dogs.

Nearby at Southampton Oval, Commercial team Key West Rangers, who exited last year?s competition at the quarter-final stage, take on nine-time champions PHC in the curtain raiser while home team Southampton Rangers tackle four-time winners Boulevard.

Other matches see Commercial side Vasco Mariners pitted against St.David?s at Devonshire Rec in a clash which will precede the contest between home side Devonshire Cougars and Valley FC.

Valley, who shocked First Division Paget in the first round, will be looking to add another scalp to their collection. They will, however, require plenty of luck against a Cougars attack that can erupt without notice at any given time.

At Wellington Oval, St.George?s take on last year?s beaten finalists Prospect in an all-First Division clash. That contest will be preceded by the women?s FA Cup match between Prospect and Rude Girls.
