Cup teams struggle in Guatemala

Bermuda?s top young tennis players have finished 11th and 12th respectively in the regional pre-qualifying tournaments for the Junior Federation Cup and Junior Davis Cup.

Competing in Guatemala, the girls? Fed Cup team of Caitlin Gordon, Cayla Cross and Catherine Cooke finished ahead of Costa Rica and the Bahamas, but behind ten other teams from the North/Central American and Caribbean area.

Trinidad and Tobago led the qualifiers ahead of hosts Guatemala and Cuba.

The Island boys, meanwhile, placed 12th out of 14 at the same venue in Junior Davis Cup qualifying.

Drew Burnett-Herkes, Charles Skater and Frederick Wade combined to finish above Aruba and Panama in 14-team event which saw Puerto Rico finish on top ahead of El Salvador and Guatemala.

Meanwhile, at the FirstCaribbean International Junior Tennis Tournament in Barbados, Bermuda?s Jacklyn Lambert put up a fight against top seed Yolande Leacock of Trinidad before going down in three sets.

Lambert stunned the tournament favourite by taking the first set 6-2, but then dropped the next two sets 1-6, 2-6 in the second round match at the National Tennis Centre.

The tournament attracted some 150 junior players from 30 countries.
