Cuts victory is a family affair
Champions Willow Cuts warmed up for an upcoming tour of Toronto with a comfortable 110-run victory over Warwick in the second round of the Western Counties at White Hill Field on Saturday.
And Cuts could not have asked for better performances from the dynamic father and son duo of Kevin and Kavon Fubler who shared seven wickets between them to lay the foundation for their team?s convincing win.
After Lamar Richardson (14) and Daniel Morgan (52) had restored order in the camp by rescuing Warwick from a precarious two for six by way of a 69-run third wicket stand, teenaged seamer Kavon ? introduced into the attack in the 16th over of the innings ? collected his first Western Counties wicket with the second ball of his fourth over when he trapped Richardson with a yorker.
?It was a little scary out there during my first over,? admitted 14-year-old Kavon Fubler after making only his second appearance in the Western Counties cup competition.
?But after I got my first wicket I got my confidence up and I felt very excited to get my first wicket in the Western Counties.
?And it was also very exciting bowling with my father because he always encourages me and that helps me to get wickets.?
The senior Fubler then struck in the very next over when he uprooted Clarkie Trott?s (0) middle stump and then held a sharp catch in the covers off his son?s bowling to dismiss Allan Douglas (0) and trigger another Warwick slide.
Berkeley Institute-bound Kavon Fubler then seized the prized wicket of Morgan in the 28th over, his third of the match, leaving his father to complete the demolition job at the opposite end with his off spin varieties.
Man-of-the-match Kevin removed Warwick?s tail in quick succession, dismissing Randy Bean without scoring and then guest player Sammy Robinson (18) and Jaime Ford (0) with the fourth and fifth deliveries of his tenth and final over to seal the win.
The veteran off spinner then dedicated his achievement to his son.
?I did it all for him,? he told . ?Unfortunately I haven?t been able to play much this season due to work commitments. But today I put my whole heart into it with my son and the whole Willow Cuts team.
?And it felt so good today to be out there with my son. There aren?t too many left arm bowlers in the Island at the moment, and so he is one of our future prospects.?
Son Kavon was also unfortunate not to add to his tally after having Morgan, who lived a charmed life, put down at long on and square leg by Bergon Spencer and Jacobi Robinson in the 22nd and 25 overs.
Warwick never really recovered after Charles Swan made the initial breakthrough in the second over, only Richardson, Morgan, Robinson and Quinton Burch (21) managed to reach double figures while four of their team-mates were dismissed for ducks.
A resolute Robinson and Burch produced Warwick?s second highest partnership of the match (33 runs) for the eighth wicket before the latter took on the arm of Jacobi Robinson fielding at deep mid wicket and lost, wicketkeeper Dwight Basden whipping off the bails with the scampering batsman well outside the crease.
Morgan scored the game?s only half century off 65 balls and hit four fours while Robinson and Burch each managed two boundaries off 39 and 34 balls respectively.
Kevin Fubler claimed four wickets for 22 runs, including two maiden wickets, while son Kavon took three wickets for 48 runs off ten overs with one maiden. Robinson and Swan accounted for the other two Warwick wickets to fall on a lively pitch that saw several deliveries take flight off a good length.
Earlier the challenger?s decision to send Cuts in to bat backfired as the champions received solid support from their top order and cruised to a formidable total in their allotted overs.
Opener Ryane Sheppard made amends for the previous week?s failure by scoring 41 runs off 90 balls with three boundaries. Fellow opener Dwight Basden was also in good nick, scoring 31 runs of 70 balls in an 85 run first wicket partnership in 19 overs along with Sheppard.
Others making valuable contributions were Trevor Forth (28 off 54 balls), Dexter Basden (31 off 47 balls) followed by a run-a-ball 37 from the bat of Sheroy Fubler.
Apart from some superb bowling by young Jaime Ford, Warwick were awful in the field as they yielded 56 runs in extras, including 39 wides and seven no balls.
Ford claimed four wickets for 46 runs to lead his team?s attack while Robinson, Burch and Stephen Bremar jr each took one apiece.
