Danes ruin Bermuda debut at lacrosse Worlds

Bermuda went down 10-6 to the Danes in their first ever foray into the world of international lacrosse.

In a respectable world championship debut in Ontario, Canada, the team lost a hard fought contest against an experienced Danish side.

A tough defensive battle in the first quarter saw both goaltenders come up with huge saves to keep the game scoreless until the 11th minute when Denmark scored twice in quick succession.

Five minutes later, Bermuda scored their first ever first international goal on a beautiful move by Ernie Theriault, ducking his defender before a quick top shelf finish over the Danish goaltender.

The Danes extended their lead in the second quarter, taking advantage of a couple of Bermuda penalties and converting two-man advantage goals. Steve Michel would rip a shot over the Danish goaltender from about 12 yards out with six minutes to go in the second quarter to reduce the lead to two before the Danes scored again to go into the half 5-2 ahead.

Just 14 seconds into the second half, Chris Kelly scored on the man advantage and ten minutes later Brett Corday netted to cut the Danish lead to one.

The bounces would not go Bermuda?s way after that as a couple of hit posts culminated in a Danish goal from a shot which hit Bermuda goaltender Steve Velotti and spun and rolled over him into the cage.

Another late third quarter goal on the man advantage by the Danes made it 7-4 at the end of the period.

An early fourth quarter goal by the Danes extended the lead to 8-4, but a fantastic move by Corday to beat two defenders and beat the goaltender on the right side gave Bermuda some hope with ten minutes to go.

But a man-advantage goal by the Danes would seal Bermuda?s fate.

Each team would add one more goal, Bermuda?s scored by Adam Szakmary for a 10-6 final score.

Steve Velotti was outstanding in the Bermuda net, stopping about 60 percent of shots taken.

Bermuda were due to play Finland last night.
