Dill to umpire in Ireland
Bermuda?s Roger Dill is among a 12-man panel of international umpires selected for next month?s ICC Trophy in Ireland.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday announced that six members of the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires and six members of the recently constituted ICC Associate and Affiliate Umpires Panel ? of which Dill is a member ? will stand in the ICC Trophy.
Billy Doctrove of Dominica is the lone West Indian to be chosen from the Emirates International Panel for the July 1-13 tournament.
?I?m excited and pleased. I welcome the opportunity and look forward to giving my best in Ireland,? said Dill who stood in the 2001 edition of the competition in Canada.
Currently standing in local matches, the 47-year-old will sharpen his officiating skills by sitting in on national team training session to observe ?the movement of the white ball? which is markedly different from the regular cherry-red cricket ball.
?That?s been recommended by the ICC and the national coach (Gus Logie) has invited me up to watch the guys practise, so I?ll be doing that as much as possible,?elaborated Dill who leaves on June 26 for Ireland.
ICC General Manager David Richardson said this tournament ? a World Cup 2007 qualifier ? would benefit umpires in developing their experience.
?This event is a good opportunity for members of both the Emirates International Panel and the Associates and Affiliates Panel to gain some experience of officiating overseas in conditions that will be unfamiliar to many of them,? he noted.
?It will give these umpires an opportunity to demonstrate their ability and stake a claim for further international appointments.?
The umpires will be assessed during the ICC Trophy with the top officials from the early phases selected to stand in the high-profile matches towards the tournament?s conclusion.
