Dudley Eve Notebook
St.George's' dismal performance from the penalty spot denied coach Herbie Bascome a rare feat.
Had the East Enders defeated Wolves, Bascome would have joined brother Andrew in the Dudley Eve winner's circle ? the first time in local football history two brothers coached separate teams to cup glory on the same day.
Still on the subject of brothers, this year's competition saw several siblings compete. Dandy Town full-back Ernest Signor is the brother of St.George's' David Signor while Wolves had brothers Torry and Jason Davis suit up in the same side.
Wolves coach Eugene Crockwell is the father of St.David's player Fiqre while Devonshire Cougars' full-back Keimo Bean ? who supplied the cross for Heys Wolfe's beauty last Friday at Somerset Cricket Club ? is the brother-in-law of coach Andrew Bascome.
l Monday was Devonshire Cougars striker Aljame Zuill's fifth appearance in a Dudley Eve final. Zuill netted a brace to spur the Big Cats to victory over North Village.
Cougars win over Village was their second cup triumph over the Reds in the East End in four years. Cougars edged Village 3-2 at Lords in the 2001-02 Martonmere Cup final ? the club's first ever major domestic cup title.
l Cougars forward Jason Dill became the fourth player to be sent off in the festive competition behind Paget's Yusaff Pitt and Dion Stovell as well as Somerset Trojans' Jelani (Roots) Butterfield.
l Monday marked the second year in succession St.George's were beaten in the final. Monday was also Cougars second straight trip to the final.
l At age 16, North Village forward Shayne Hollis is believed to be the youngest player ever to play in the Dudley Eve competition and start in the final. At 40, Wolves full-back Robert Thomas was the oldest player in the competition.
l Lyndon Raynor came out of retirement at Wellington Oval on Monday. Raynor, who quit officiating late last year, was the fourth official for the Dudley Eve Premier Division final involving Cougars and Village. Women's referee Jenny Villamarin, who took charge of the First Division Dudley Eve final between wolves and St.George's, is believed to be the first female match official to referee a major men's cup final. Senior referee George O'Brien ate a bag of peanuts prior to Cougars cup clash with Somerset Trojans and still managed to officiate the match without getting stomach cramp.
l After winning the Dudley Eve Champions Cup, Cougars coach Andrew Bascome denied telling Argentina will upstage Brazil at this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.
North Village president Shervin Dill also denied paying off match officials after Domico Coddington went sprawling in the penalty area.
Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Larry Mussenden would be denied at Wellington Oval on Monday. Just as the BFA boss was about to present ecstatic Wolves the silverware and make a speech ? victorious Wolves players grabbed the showpiece and ran off on a victory lap.
