Eadie pays heavy price for mix-up
Wait a minute, Edward Eadie only weighing150lbs? Surely some mistake?
And there was.
The 2007 BF&M Weight Handicap 5K champion's entry form had been filled in and submitted by a member of Eadie's family who had accidentally put down their own weight rather than Eadie's heavier figure.
As a result of the slip-up Eadie found himself languishing much further down the final handicap rankings than normal after Tuesday evening's road race, although he may take some consolation from finding himself squarely categorised in the race whippet men division.
It was only after the race in St. George's that the mistake on the entry form was uncovered, leading to some confusion at the prize giving.
The overall winner of the 5K was Chris Estwanik who, despite the high heat of the evening, covered the distance of just over three miles in 15 minutes and 30 seconds. The May 24 champion was so fast that his finishing time, divided by his weight in pounds, also made him the weight handicap winner on initial calculations.
However, Eadie is no slouch, covering the scenic route in 22:06 to finish 30th out of the 102 finishers, so had his handicap been calculated with his true weight the category result might well have been different.
Once the facts emerged, Estwanik commendably volunteered up the handicap prize, which was eventually given to a youngster who had taken part in the popular race around the East End town.
There was no such mix-up in the women's race which saw Ashley Estwanik finish fastest in sixth overall with a time of 18:34, while the weight handicap winner was Christina Dotson who ran a time of 23:44.
Second fastest woman on the night was Clare De Ste Croix in 21:07.
Younger runners made an impact at the event, particularly Chayce Smith, 21, who has rapidly emerged as one of the Island's brightest young distance running talents after a fourth place in the May 24 Half Marathon Derby and a second place in Tuesday's 5K where he ran an impressive 16:11.
Coming home seventh overall was the even younger Alex Eve, just 14, but chasing the heels of Ashley Estwanik across the line as he ran 18:41.
With 102 in the main race, there were also 78 entrants who walked the 5K route, the first to return being Sheena Young in 36 minutes exactly, followed 15 seconds later by veteran marathon ace Peter Lever.
5K race result: 1. Chris Estwanik 15:30, 2. Chayce Smith 16:11, 3. Evan Naude 16:25, 4. Kavin Smith 16:54, 5. Gerd Balon 18:26, 6. Ashley Estwanik 18:34, 7. Alex
Eve 18:41, 8. Tony Banks 18:44, 9. Chris Cabral 19:04, 10. William Wood 19:06.
