Eagles back in soccer top flight
Somerset Eagles 4 Paget 2
A week after having their wings clipped in the FA Cup semi-final, suffering a 3-1 loss to North Village, Somerset Eagles yesterday scored a comprehensive victory over Paget at White Hill Field to secure promotion to the Premier Division.
The Somerset Bridge side are set to make their return to top flight soccer for the first time since the late 1980s as they join First Division champions Boulevard in the step up to the Premier Division.
A happy team manager, Shane Proctor, said that they were delighted to have secured promotion and were now looking forward to making it into the Shield Competion final.
Ironically, their Shield semi-final tomorrow night at Devonshire Recreation Club will again pit the west enders against Paget.
"Our main priority was to get promoted and everybody knows it's been a while since we have been in the Premier Division and we are looking forward to the challenge," said Proctor.
"The season was not a sprint, it was more of a marathon. But the boys hung in there for the long haul despite being distracted because of the FA Cup games. Now we can focus on the Shield."
Eagles made their task harder yesterday after experiencing a host of early misses, but they still managed to grab a 2-0 lead by the interval on goals by Ian Raynor and Rodre Wilson.
Substitute Sean Dill put Eagles further ahead after 48 minutes but Paget, playing with a fighting spirit got back to 3-1 when Eagles goalkeeper Adrian Burrows fouled, allowing Jarmal Darrell to stroke home a penalty after 57 minutes.
However, Eagles, realising what was at stake, refused to let their opponents take the initiative and after 62 minutes Lamaul Crofton headed home their fourth goal from close range.
Paget weren't discouraged and continued to apply pressure on Eagles' defence. They were finally rewarded for their efforts when Kenny Outerbridge fired home their second goal after 83 minutes.
Eagles might have added to their tally but striker Darin Dowling hit the upright seconds from the end.
S.Rangers 10 Social Club 0
Social Club's woeful season got even worse yesterday as they conceded another ten goals against Southampton Rangers at the Oval.
They have now let in 108 goals for the season, believed to be a club record.
Social Club, who have lost all 15 games they have played, fielded a full side but still couldn't halt the rampaging Rangers, who were led by a hat-trick from Alfred Wolfe.
Rangers scored five goals in each half. Others on the scoresheet were Lamont Stowe (2), Neville Grant, Brenton Harris, Jason Raynor, Cory Broadbelt and Oscar Riley.
