Eagles have wings clipped
Somerset Eagles' run at the top of the First Division came to an inglorious end yesterday when they lost 1-0 away to St. David's.
Desmond Crockwell connected with an Otis Minors cross in the 65th minute to send Eagles crashing to their first league defeat and open the door for Boulevard to leapfrog them.
The Blazers made hard work of their home fixture against Paget before winning 3-1 at White Hill Field.
Paget took a shock lead through Dwayne Hurdle after only four minutes. Melchisedic Gibbons levelled the score three minutes later but the home team had to wait until 20 minutes into the second half before Gibbons netted his second to put them ahead.
Paget goalkeeper Wayne Smith, who was mostly responsible for keeping Boulevard at bay, saved a penalty by Jahmel Samuels to maintain his side's interest in a shock result. But he was left helpless when Takeyhi Walker netted from close range with five minutes remaining. Boulevard have 23 points from seven wins and two draws and are a point clear of Eagles.
Prospect, who hammered St. David's 7-1 in their last match before the Christmas break, had their shooting boots on in a 4-1 defeat of Hamilton Parish in the first game at St. David's Oval.
Parish led through Sean Dill but Prospect went on the dominate after equalising through John Richmond in the 37th minute. Carlos Lopes netted in the 48th minute with Phillip Bailey (66th) and Vic Ball (72nd) completing an outstanding day for the boys in blue who remain fifth.
The remaining match, at Malabar Field, saw Ireland Rangers defeat bottom side Young Men's Social Club 3-0. Jonathan Bean got their first goal after 19 minutes but the struggling Bluebirds made them wait until the hour before a Duane DeRoza penalty brought a measure of comfort. Regino Gomes completed the scoring in the 70th minute.
