Eagles leave it late
A goal 12 minutes from the end of extra time by substitute Allan Wilkinson saved First Division Eagles from having to face their Commercial B League opponents in a replay of this FA Cup first round clash at White Hill Field.
Anything but victory would have been humiliation for the home side who were solid favourites and for a while it seemed possible that the visitors would ride their luck and force another match-up.
But Wilkinson came off the bench with other ideas and sealed things for Eagles.
Eagles had to fight from behind to pull off the feat after being denied time and time again by Jason Simons in Island?s goal. He showed great agility and anticipation throughout, pulling off many miraculous saves ? including a penalty by Kirk Simons after 75 minutes when he dived to his left to push the ball out.
After 92 minutes, Island took a surprise lead after a defender back-headed towards the Eagles? goalkeeper only to see Bermuda Olympic sprinter Xavier James, who led their attack, intercept to steer the ball home.
However the one goal deficit only inspired Eagles who continued to dominate as they had done throughout the contest and Jermaine Salaam got the equaliser after 97 minutes when he smartly headed home a cross.
The Island squad, clearly tiring and with no players on their bench after showing up with just 11 starters, never looked like creating another shock goal with many players falling to the ground ailing from cramp.
It wasn?t a real surprise when Eagles got the goal they deserved though Wilkinson.
Bermuda World Cup cricketer Lionel Cann cracked two goals to lead the East Enders to this victory at White Hill in the opening game at the venue.
The match-up of Commercial League teams saw Cann put his team ahead with goals after 22 and 36 minutes.
Colin James pulled one back for Pot after 64 minutes but the Allstars soon re-established their two-goal lead with a third goal from Casey Burgess after 65 minutes.
Pot refused to lie down and fought back to make the score close again with a goal from Martin Godley after 69 minutes, but they just didn?t have enough punch to get the equaliser and force a replay.
The lone Premier Division team in the round got what can be termed an expected result against their Commercial League opponents in this clash at Malabar.
Despite winning easily Rangers were a frustrated group whose goal count could have reached double digits had they not argued among themselves throughout the contest.
Winning their first game of the season, however, may give them the boost they need to go forward with enthusiasm in coming weeks.
They scored three goals in each half, McLee Smith, Jerome Coddrington and Shawn Brangman found the mark in the opening half while Trevor Corday, substitute Winston Martin and Andrew Outerbridge were the scorers after the interval.
