Eagles out for revenge in cup opener

Somerset Eagles will be out to avenge last season's Friendship Trophy final loss to Dandy Town when the two Premier Division clubs do battle in tomorrow's opening Martonmere Cup clash at BAA Field.

Last March it took a second half Brendon O'Riordan sizzler to finally kill off Eagles' cup hopes.

This time around, however, the west enders hope to set the record straight.

"It's obvious we will be looking for revenge," declared Somerset Bridge president Bray Saltus yesterday.

"The guys felt that they were robbed in that match. But that was a stepping stone and sometimes you just need to go a little deeper. We should have blown them away with the chances that we had but unfortunately we didn't capitalise on them."

Town eventually prevailed 3-2 in that contest while the two clubs split the league series with a win apiece.

Eagles will be missing a few players tomorrow for their Martonmere Cup baptism. Sidelined are Duval Binns (fractured wrist), Nakia Smith (ankle) and striker Rodre (Piper) Wilson who failed a fitness test this week.

They will, however, welcome Jelani (Roots) Butterfield back into the squad while former Boulevard player Gary Mallory will be marking his first match at the helm.

"I think in all honesty we have a good team that can compete with everyone," added Saltus. "If we come to play on the day we can entertain the crowd with the style of football that we play. And the guys are really taking their game serious."

Town picked up several notable players during the off-season among them former Somerset Trojan David Lawler and Wolves' duo Jared Peniston and Jamel Warren. Gone is striker Janeiro Tucker while it is unclear whether or not defender Pernell Douglas has decided to remain at the club. Douglas obtained a release but has yet to make a move.

Tomorrow's contest kicks off at 2 p.m. while North Village and Devonshire Colts feature in the day's second match at 4 p.m.

Village recorded a 2-0 shut-out against Colts during last weekend's Charity Cup clash at the same venue.

l The women's seven-a-side matches originally scheduled for tomorrow have now been rescheduled for next week due to the unfit state of Gym Field.
