East and West's best clash

The hugely popular under-10 cricket league culminates with an East v West All Star game tomorrow at the National Sports Centre.

The league, which was formed this year after the appointment of Wendell Smith as the Bermuda Cricket Board's academy director, has involved over 90 children and was won by St. George's, who went through the season unbeaten.

The competing teams included Flatts, Warwick, St. George's, Devonshire Rec. and two sides from Saltus.

To ensure the safety of the children, a soft core ball is used for all games instead of a standard hard cricket ball while the emphasis is on full participation in every discipline by every player.

"We have been encouraged with how popular the Under 10 league has become and we are beginning to see how the younger children can really excel in the game when they are given the chance," said Smith yesterday.

"I would like to emphasise, however, that this is a budding programme which can only continue to exist next year with the help of adult volunteers. It does not necessarily take a cricketing expert at all, as we need adults to help transport the children to the games and/or to supervise those waiting to bat on the side lines.

"Of course we are desperate for those with a bit, or a lot, of cricketing background too, and would love to see them helping with the coaching. I am really looking forward to this league developing into the cornerstone of our grassroots development."

The All-Star game begins at 10.a.m..

Any parent who would like to enrol their child in the under 10 league next year is encouraged to contact the BCB on 292-8958.
