Sergio Edness emerged victorious in Fecchio Cup action at Belmont Hills yesterday.

The teenager, playing in the 18-21 division, finished with a three-round score of 231 and left the rest of the field in his wake in what had been trying conditions.

His nearest rival, Terence Daniels, playing in the 15-17 year-old division, finished on 250. Daniel Augustus, also playing in that category came third overall.

Mark Phillips (13) took the honours in the 13-14 year-old division, finishing with a three-round total of 240, while Angus Lang ended atop the 12 and Under division with 232.

In the inaugural Novice competition, a nine-hole event held over three rounds to a Stableford format, Calum Morrison emerged the winner, amassing 79 points.

Edness did not have his best outing yesterday, firing an 82 after ending Monday's round with a 73 and Sunday's with 76. But, nevertheless, he was still very pleased with the final outcome.

"It was kind of difficult today," said Edness last night. "The wind kind of picked up on certain holes, which really caused me to have some high numbers.

"But overall I played pretty well. I maintained a decent average I guess."

Edness said the best part of his game had been his approach shots.

"But the conditions throughout the whole tournament were unpredictable. You never really knew what was going to happen or where the ball was going to go," he said.

"At Belmont the tricky lies and tricky greens means you don't know which way the ball is going to go. It's all a learning experience, you just have to play as you go."

Edness said winning the tournament meant etching his name into Island golfing history.

"It means getting my name in the record books so that ten or 20 years from now I can look back and see my name on the trophy," he said.

Edness says his game has come on leaps and bounds in 2003.

"I've matured more as a player over the last year and that, more than anything, has been the biggest thing," he said, adding he aimed to put that new found ability to good use. "I am trying to get into Barry University in Miami. It's a small Division Two school but I like it because I have been to Florida when I used to go to the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. I just like the environment of Florida, you can play golf all year round."

Phillips, meanwhile, admitted he was relaxed going into the final day's play and he could afford to be, having held an 11-shot lead from the previous night.

"It felt really good," he said of finishing up on the 18th as divisional winner.

Asked for his best shot of the tournament, Phillips said: "Probably on the second day, my birdie on the par five No.6."
