FA Cup Round-up

Two second half strikes from Parish's Sean Dill and another right at the death by Irving Burgess gave the visitors a fully deserved place in the quarter- finals of the FA Cup at Lords yesterday.

Colts, who were already hurting after squandering a two-goal lead against Prospect in their First Division game on Thursday night at The Den, went behind after only six minutes via an Ernest Lathan strike.

They were given a lifeline 12 minutes later however when referee Tracey Adams awarded them a spot kick, converted with aplomb by Kumar Smith.

All square at the break, both teams created little of substance until the 75th minute, when Dill pounced in the box following some rather slack Colts defending.

Five minutes later, Colts goalscorer Smith received a straight red card for an off the ball kick which was spotted by the referee.

The dismissed player proved reluctant to go quietly however, remaining on the pitch for at least two minutes remonstrating with the referee and complaining that he had been violently provoked.

With two minutes to go meanwhile, Dill claimed his second with a well-won header at the far post before another piece of sloppy defending ? this time a poor clearance from the Colts backline ? allowed Burgess to volley home from 20 yards out, much to the delight of the Parish supporters on the touchline.

PHC handed out the anticipated thrashing to lowly Commercial Division side St. George's All-Stars yesterday ? with the underdogs fielding in their starting XI former Bermuda international Cal Raynor who is only three years shy of his 60th birthday.

The Warwick club's Dennis Russell claimed the easiest of hat-tricks while Sammy Swan, Michael Williams and Blenn Bean all snapped up one goal a piece to complete the rout at Wellington Oval.

Playing into a ferociously strong wind in the first half, the All-Stars found themselves camped out near their own penalty area and made it into their opponents half on only three occasions.

Such was PHC's domination of possession that their goalkeeper Raymon Glasford did not touch the ball once in 45 minutes of football ? a fact recognised by referee Lyndon Raynor, who deliberately rolled the ball towards Glasford for his first feel of the ball as the teams trudged off at half time.

Meanwhile, Swan opened the scoring after only four minutes from five yards out while a delicate glancing header from Russell in the 21st minute, when he rose unchallenged to meet a cross from the right, made it 2-0.

For all their possession, however, a good final ball was consistently lacking from PHC's attacking play, with weak cross after weak cross being easily cleared by an All-Star's backline who probably should have been overwhelmed much earlier.

But as the Commercial side's backs-to-the-wall approach began to run out the steam later in the second half, the floodgates were opened and even the introduction of the experienced veteran Herbie Bascome to marshal the defence proved insufficient.

Gambling by repeatedly employing the offside trap, the All-Star's were caught out over and over again and were punished by a flurry of goals.

Dandy Town kept their FA Cup hopes alive at the Barn yesterday after exploding for three second half goals after going into the dressing room scoreless at the half.

Carlos Smith netted a brace while Seion Darrell also converted to catapult Hornets through to the quarter-finals.

Goals from Donnie Charles and Travis Wilkinson earned Rangers victory in this FA Cup battle between the blues at Southampton Oval.

Both of Rangers goals arrived in the second half after the two teams went into the dressing room deadlocked at the half.

A John Richmond second half goal floored X Roads hopes of reaching a second cup final of the season.

Richmond converted in the 75th minute with a wind-assisted shot that beat the 'keeper from 25 yards out and propelled the 2003 FA Cup finalists through the next round.

Ireland Rangers' maiden season in Premier Division football took another twist yesterday when the Dockyard based club advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals with victory over First Division minnows Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field.
