Fans put their shirts on underdogs

Island sports store owner Frankie Brewster must have been just as stunned as reigning world champions France were after their shock 1-0 loss to newcomers Senegal during the opening day of the 2002 World Cup in Seoul, Korea yesterday.

For moments after the referee blew the final whistle signalling an historic win for the African nation - once colonised by the French - crazed soccer fans converged upon the Pro Shop and bought out the store's entire rack of Senegal World Cup jerseys in a heartbeat.

"It was as though the excitement came straight off of the television," said store clerk Tappy DeSilva. "The most popular word was 'upset'!"

Frankie Brewster Jr. admitted that they didn't expect the African nation to emerge as a big seller this year.

"As soon as the whistle went, five minutes afterwards everyone entered the store looking for Senegal jerseys and we completely sold out of them.

"Since it was their first time in the World Cup we basically bought in about a 'baker's dozen' (13) and they all went within five minutes after the match."

Those who were left out in the cold, however, will now have to wait a while for the next shipment to arrive.

"The last order that we put in took over six months to get here and those were the official teams that made the World Cup Finals," added Brewster. "The ones that were lucky to get their hands on one could consider themselves very fortunate."
