Fed Cup team finish in style
Bermuda's Fed Cup team finished their Americas Zone Group II tournament in style yesterday, sweeping aside the challenge of Trinidad and Tobago 3-0.
Ashley Brooks and Zarah DeSilva both won their singles matches and then Brooks and Sasha Fisher teamed up to secure victory in the doubles in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The result meant that Bermuda moved ahead of Trinidad and Tobago in the overall standings, finishing the tournament fourth in Pool B, behind winners Chile, Jamaica and Bolivia respectively.
Puerto Rico won Pool A and, along with Chile, are promoted to Group I.
Team captain Kelly Holland said it had been a great, albeit testing, day for the team.
"When you go out on the court and it's a winnable match sometimes it's difficult because you get nervous," said Holland. "They had to really stick it out, play tough and they did. There were some very scary moments though, nail-biting at times, when it could have gone either way."
Brooks defeated Danielle Cosgrove 6-2, 6-4 in the opener.
"The other girl was not playing very well so Ashley just needed to be consistent and keep the ball in play," Holland said. "But that's hard to do and I don't think she was particularly thrilled with the way she played."
DeSilva, meanwhile, lost the first set 6-0 to Lisa Fung-Kee-Fung but turned it around in the second, winning that 6-3 and the third 6-4.
"She lost the first set very quickly and played very poorly," said Holland of her player. "But at 5-0 she decided she needed to get consistent and try and salvage something from the set.
"She couldn't, as it turned out, but she ended up winning the match by just keeping the ball in play. They were having good rallies but the other girl would just make a mistake, so it was down to consistency really."
In the doubles, Brooks and a fresh Fisher won the first set against Cosgrove and Fung-Kee-Fung 6-2, lost the second 6-4, but then took the decider 6-4.
