FEED THE GOATTM

When Shaun Goater was released from his Reading frustrations and sent to Coventry on loan at the end of the 2004-5 season, Mark Georgevic?s final dream was completed.

The football-obsessed lawyer had always wanted to see his one and only football client play for his beloved home team and although the loan spell was short ? and Goater failed to find the net ? the excitement was still there.

?That was great to have Shaun at my club,? said Georgevic, whose relationship with Goater began when he was working in Bermuda for Cox & Wilkinson in the early 1990s.

?It?s what any fan wants, a great guy and a great goalscorer playing for their team.?

But it was much earlier in his career when Goater was making his way with Rotherham that the two came across each other. Goater was modelling at Trimingham?s along with David Bascome when Georgevic met him and their mutual love of football quickly drew them together.

Disappointed at not being able to watch the Goat play his pro games, the lawyer set about finding a way of getting match tapes sent back to Bermuda and an edited version ? with his commentary ? began appearing on VSB on a Monday night.

Although the show ended in 1993 when Georgevic left, the two kept in touch and eventually he was signed as an agent ? the first deal struck was a re-negotiation of his deal with the Millers.

He then helped broker the move to Bristol City and subsequently Manchester City, although the extra-curricular work that other Premiership players were getting involved in didn?t really interest Goater.

Although Goater was very marketable ? because of goals against Manchester United and that ?Feed the Goat and he will score? chant ? he didn?t appear keen on pushing himself a la David Beckham and David Ginola.

?Other players were in adverts and did a lot of promotional work, but Shaun wasn?t really interested in any of that,? continued Georgevic, who spoke with genuine affection for his first and last footballing client.

?He just wanted to play football and wasn?t really fussed about the rest of the stuff.?

Although, as the BFA?s UK representative, Georgevic also did some work with Kyle Lightbourne, it was mostly with Goater that he was kept busy over the years.

When Soccer AM, the popular English football show, set up a regular section of the show featuring attempts to shoot a ball into a giant goat?s mouth as part of a ?Feed the Goat? feature, there was no copyright paid to Goater ? although ?Feed the Goat? is now trademarked.

The biggest extra-curricular work for Goater is a book he is now working on, due to be launched in September both in the UK and here.

Georgevic?s football agent career ended on Saturday and his abiding memories of the great man ? who he watched as often as he could ? were overwhelmingly positive.

?I?ve met a lot of footballers in my time,? added Georgevic, who negotiated Goater?s move to Reading on a cell phone from Elbow Beach.

?And without doubt Shaun is the nicest I have ever met. Despite all his success in the game ? he is a cult hero to the blue half of Manchester and well known by pretty much everyone who knows anything about football ? he has remained down to earth and humble throughout.

?I?ve never seen a player sign so many autographs and he always found time for the fans. One of my fondest memories was after his final game at Maine Road when we were leaving the ground. It started to rain but Shaun stayed out and signed all these autographs for all these young kids. He got drenched but he wanted to do it. He never changed when he became a top player and that is something we all admire him for.

?He will be missed by everyone in the game.?
