It's been a long time coming, but Kyle Lightbourne finally hit the back of the net last night.

The Island striker scored the second of Macclesfield Town's two goals at Oxford United to end a league drought that stretched back as far as November.

He had not scored since hitting two for his former club Stoke City in a 3-0 league victory over Swindon Town last year.

Since then he has lived the life of a nomad going on loan to a number of clubs, failing to score at any of them, before finally settling down at Third Division Macclesfield.

Lightbourne had been brought in by manager Gil Prescott over the summer in a bid to fire the unfancied Silkmen to promotion.

He became the club's highest paid player ever and his signing was somewhat of a coup, given that a number of other higher profile clubs had sought his signature.

However, Macclesfield got off to somewhat of a shaky start this season and though he came close on a number of occasions Lightbourne just could not force the ball over the line.

Prescott, though, remained convinced he had made an astute capture and publicly backed his star man to come good.

The fans too remained loyal to the Bermudian and refused to get on his back.

Just last week he predicted that the goals would come and soon.

In an interview with The Royal Gazette he said: "I have gone close on a number of occasions and I have had a hand in a lot of the goals we have scored.

"I think it's just a matter of getting that first goal and then they will start to go in for me."

Lightbourne's strike partner, Lee Glover, the club's top scorer, put Macclesfield ahead at Oxford's Kassam Stadium last night in first-half injury time.

The Islander doubled the lead three minutes into the second-half, heading home from six yards out after a great ball into the box from Kevin Keen, which left the home defence static.
