<Bt-1z38>First Division title showdown tonight
An unsual season-ending First Division title deciding double header takes place at the northern field of the National Sports Centre at 7.30 tonight when leaders Ireland Rangers and second-placed Devonshire Colts fight for the championship.
The side-by-side contest, believed to be a first, has Ireland Rangers taking on mid-table Somerset Eagles while Devonshire Colts also face a mid-table contender in Prospect United.
Rangers and Colts are tied on points, with 41 apiece, but the former have a slight two-goal advantage on goal difference which enables them to lead the division — making them slight favourites to emerge with the goods after 90 minutes of play.
The situation is a simple one. Both teams must win but more pressure appear to be on Colts who have to come away with a three-goal advantage.
A season ago the two teams also had something in common as both failed in their struggle against relegation from the Premier Division. However they have both have already regained their status to play in top-flight football next season and this year’s campaign has seen them make a spirited fightback — each losing just twice in league play to date.
While these teams battle for supremacy a Premier Division game of no real consequence takes place at BAA field where Somerset Trojans, fifth in the table, take on last-placed St. David’s Warriors at 9 p.m. after a women’s clash between Somerset Hurricanes and Prospect at 7 p.m.
The Trojans will be positioning themselves to finish ahead of Dandy Town in the table and hold down fourth place to snatch a bigger share of the prize money awarded to the top finishers this season.
