First medal for Island

Bermuda claimed their first medal of the 2005 Island Games, with the ladies tennis team securing a bronze on the hot courts of Gibraltar yesterday.

A 3-0 victory over Alderney was enough to make the podium with Zara de Silva winning 406, 6-2 (10-3), Sasha Fisher claiming a 6-0, 6-0 triumph and Caitlin Gordon and Morgan Lightbourne combining for a 6-2, 6-1 win.

And a victory over Cayman for the men yesterday leaves them taking on the hosts Gibraltar with medals of all hues still up for grabs today ? but also the ignominy of fourth place.

A 2-1 victory yesterday was achieved over their Caribbean rivals with Andy Bray beating a former world number 290 6-4, 7-6 and James Collieson claiming an equally impressive 6-4, 6-2 win. The doubles pairing of Jenson Bascome and Gavin Manders went down 7-5, 7-6.

It wasn?t such a great day for the ladies as the individual competition got underway with only Caitlin Gordon (7-6, 7-5 over a local opponent) and Zara de Silva (bye) making it through to the next round.

The men?s singles begins today and the ladies will play another round of the singles and the first doubles games.

Despite 25 points from Jenaya Wade-Fray, the ladies basketball team went down 69-46 against the hosts but the men achieved a dramatic victory in front of more than 1,000 fans at the new sports centre on the Rock.

UK pro Sullivan Phillips was the star performer and Graham Robinson the leading scorer as Roderick Spencer?s team defeated Gibraltar 69-67 after holding a six point half-time lead.
