Five more young athletes qualify for Carifta Games

Another five of Bermuda's best young athletes reached the qualifying standard for the Carifta Games during a track and field meet at the weekend.

Sean Trott, Jasmin Brunson, Tre Houston, Alexis Bean and Allison Outerbridge will be searching for podium places in St. Kitts in March after delivering impressive performances at the National Sports Centre.

A total of 13 athletes, also including Matthew Spring, Ryan Furbert, Aaron Evans, Kyla Bolden, Shuntae Hendrickson, Taylor Ashley-Bean, Ashley Berry and Megan Berry have now booked their tickets to the annual Caribbean event.

And Donna Watson, from Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA), believes having such a healthy number of qualifiers at this early stage bodes well for Bermuda's chances of producing a medal yield.

"We were very pleased, but not surprised, that these five athletes met the qualifying standard for Carifta," said the former track star. "It's still quite early in terms of qualifying and we already have as many athletes qualified as we took to last year's Carifta in Turks and Caicos."

During Saturday's meet, the distance events saw Sean Trott run a time of 16.45.9 in the 5000m and Alexis Bean finished the 1500m in 5.02.01. In the 200m Tre Houston ran 21.6 seconds, while in the long jump Jasmin Brunson posted a leap of 5.72 metres and Allison Outerbridge recorded 11.31 metres in the triple jump.

The BTFA are looking to take a larger team to this year's Carifta Games than the one that travelled to Turks and Caicos and Watson said there was still sufficient time for athletes to qualify.

"We're looking to take a bigger team to Carifta this time around and there are plenty of opportunities for more athletes to follow those who have qualified," she said. "There are also our overseas athletes like Arantxa King and Tre Simons and hopefully they should qualify as well.

"In Turks and Caicos we didn't pick up as many medals as we were hoping to, so we're looking to make amends in St. Kitts."

The Carifta Games run from March 21 to 25, with the qualifying window remaining open until just a few weeks before the competition.
