Five under for Bermudian duo
The putts finally sank for Bermudian duo Michael Sims and Andrew Trott as they carded a 66 yesterday in the World Cup qualifier in Mexico.
The five-under total saw the team drop down to 12th out of 17 nations competing at the 7,230 yard El Tigre Golf Club in Neuvo Vallarta yesterday for a place in next year?s World Cup in Spain.
Again battling stifling heat, Sims, a tour pro, and Trott, the pro at Tucker?s Point, were one-over after a three-putt on the fourth and then were guilty of missed putts on the next hole.
But, playing the best-ball format, they then birdied the next five holes and the 18th to leave them on 66 and going into the final day ? returning to the alternate shot format ? with high hopes of securing a top ten finish in the four-day event.
?It was a bit better out there today,? said Sims, who believes that ?within the next few years? Bermuda could qualify in the top three of this event for the World Cup.
?The greens are quite bumpy but I think we were getting the hang of them and it was nice to see a few putts go down. It is a learning experience and I think Bermuda can do well in this format if they go in to the competition not being afraid of the other teams.
?Today we are going out to play solid golf and see where we can end up. If we put in a good round, there is no reason why we can?t finish in the top half of the field.?
Bermuda will be paired with Israel today for the final day of competition in which they still sit ahead of Jamaica, Costa Rica, Peru, Guatemala and Serbia and Montenegro.
