Flyers shine at Jersey meet

The Flyers Track Club returned from The Tommy Burns Indoor Track and Field Meet held at the Armory in Jersey City this past weekend after enjoying some significant success.

As this was the first time most of the youngster competed in an indoor track meet, expectations were not high.

The children proved their coaches wrong, however, with some exceptional performances ? with most placing in the top three in their respective events.

In the girls youth division (1993-1994) Keshuntay Graham placed first overall in the 55 metres and first in the 200 metres heat. Tonya Robinson and Kenya Thompson placed second in their 55 metres heats and second and third respectively in the 200 metres. In the boys youth division, meanwhile, Thayne Simons placed third in his heat in the 55 metres and first in the 200 metres heat. Elsewhere, in the girls intermediate division, Michellae Edwards placed second while Akilah Bremar placed third.

One of the highlights of the track meet was Dage Minors performances in the midget division who came first in the 1600 metres after an epic battle with another rival athlete.

Another surprise was the performance of one of our new members, Shuntae Hendrickson in the midget division. In the 1600 metres she was leading the race up to the last lap after a barnstorming run but unfortunately ran out of steam in the later stages and was then passed by two girls and ended up placing an impressive third.

Hendrickson was then up against the same two girls in the 400 metres, and after sitting in second place until the last turn, she turned on the after-burners to sprint to the line in first. Ashley Berry had a great run in the 1600 metres and led the pack for the entire race in finishing first.

Other great performances included Michellae Edwards placing first in the intermediate girls 400 metres heat and Akilah Bremar placing first overall with Edwards coming out third overall.Darico Clarke placed second in the 400 metres intermediate division and fourth in the 1600 metres. Tre Simons had one of his best runs as well, placing third in the 400 metres after leading the race but having someone knock off his shoe on the final straight which moved him into third place. The real significance of the athletes? performance, however, was the fact that the times they ran were comparable to most of their personal best times outdoors.

This is significant as it is early in the season and with more turns to contend with when running on indoor 200 metres track, tend to be slower.
