?Football is in good hands with these youngsters?
Larry Mussenden has condemned the behaviour of a small number of parents who verbally abused the referee and walked onto the field during the controversial Under 15 Youth league championship decider on Saturday.
With BFA-Appleby league leaders Dandy Town two points clear with only one game to go, Kenny Thompson?s second placed Academy needed nothing less than victory to pip their rivals at the post.
But contrary to what was reported previously, with the scores level at 3-3 an Academy goal which had been awarded by referee Antoine Augustus was then disallowed after the intervention of a Town parent, whose protestations reportedly persuaded the ref to consult his linesman ? who also happened to be the Town assistant coach.
After some deliberation, it was decided there had been a handball in the box immediately prior to the Academy goal and that the strike should be ruled out.
Outraged, two Academy parents then walked on to the field to complain and it was several minutes before order was restored, while the game itself ended in a draw and handed Town the championship.
The Bermuda Football Association president meanwhile yesterday expressed disappointment with the behaviour of those who decided to hold up the game by approaching the referee ? ?regardless of the rights and wrongs of the decision itself?.
?I was at the game and watched most of the second half,? Mussenden said.
?I was impressed with the standard of football on show and rest assured the future of Bermuda football is in good hands with those youngsters.
?The behaviour of the very small number of parents or supporters who walked on to the field to verbally abuse the referee was very unfortunate and not acceptable at any level or on any football field in Bermuda.
?Saying that, however, I would like to express my congratulations to both teams for making the league so competitive right down to the last game of the season. There had to be a winner of course, but they all did extremely well.?
