Bermuda football was yesterday mourning the death of Prospect United defender David Roberts.

A native of Toronto, Canada, Roberts became the Island's fourth road fatality over the weekend after losing control of his motorcycle on Parsons Road, Pembroke.

Sunday's match between Prospect and Social Club was later called off.

The 27-year old footballer, who also dabbled in other recreational sports, was employed locally at Capital G as an IT specialist.

He joined Prospect in July, 2006.

"David was a friend and liked by all from the time he first showed up for training. He was always looking to do whatever he could to help the team," said Prospect coach Earl Basden.

Roberts is the second footballer to pass away this year following the death last month of Hamilton Parish's Justin Matthews.

Basden added: "David's true character came out when we played St. George's Colts at Devonshire Recreation Club. Our goalkeeper got injured and David said to me: 'I'll go in goal. I've played there before, and I'll do it again'."

The player's heroics spurred United to a 2-1 win over the East Enders.

"This is a tremendous loss, not just for the team, but for all that came in contact with him," Basden said. "David was a very likeable person and we will all miss him very much."
