Former Dock Hill star dies

Football has lost another outstanding player following the sudden death of former Dock Hill Rangers goalkeeper Carlton Burchall.

Burchall, who changed his name to Hanee Samir Askia, represented the club from the late 1950s to mid 1960s and was one of the premier goalkeepers at the time, helping his team to several major honours.

While there were many other ?keepers who were more recognised for their ability to pull off spectacular saves, Burchall was regarded as being totally dependable, and a key figure in the teams which triumphed in league and cup competition.

He played in a side that included several of the Island?s top players, spearheaded by arguably the best of his era, Glenn (Gappa) Wade. Others in the Dock Hill line-up were Wade?s outstanding strike partner Bayfield Clarke, Irven Simmons, Howard Romaine, Barry (Flat Top) Ingham, Granville Woolridge, Winfield Smith and Burchall?s youngest brother, Roddy.

?They were a great team at the time, there is no doubt about it. Of course, Glenn Wade will go down as one of Bermuda?s best ever forwards but goalkeeper Burchall did play a vital role with this team,? said sports historian Warrington (Soup) Zuill.
