Former Yankee returns to run baseball clinic

Keith Hughes, a former Yankees outfielder with Bermudian heritage, is one of eight professional baseball players heading to Bermuda this weekend for a junior coaching clinic.

The event is expected to attract as many as 280 children between the ages of seven and 15 and takes place at Kindley Field between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Hughes, who is related to the Peniston family, played for the Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and the Cincinnati Reds organisations between 1987 and 1993.

His mother was born in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and attended Bermuda High School for Girls, his great grandfather owned the Frascati Hotel in Flatts, while his grandfather founded Peniston-Brown perfume shops in Hamilton and other locations.

The players will be offering kids coaching and advice from the basics to more advanced techniques in what will be the second annual clinic staged here.

“This is a unique opportunity for the youngsters to learn from former major league players,” said organiser Jim Ansaldi, who heavily relied on sponsorship to organise the clinic.

“Baseball is flourishing here and we get as many as 750 kids playing in the leagues. The clinics give them a good chance to learn the game and we can keep the dream of one day seeing a Bermudian playing in the major leagues.

“But it seems with Keith Hughes we have already partially achieved that even though it went unrecognised.”
