Four minute barrier can be broken ? Thie
Give me four top competitors and some decent weather and someone will break the four-minute mile.
So says Front Street Mile double champion James Thie who is determined to see the $10,000 prize go to an elite runner next year.
?I think the four-minute mile can be done,? said Thie, whose bedroom wall back in Wales is adorned with a framed front page depicting last year?s triumph.
?I have done 3.55 indoors and even with the couple of seconds needed for the turns, I think it is definitely possible.
?Obviously we need some better weather ? you have no chance when it is like it was on Friday, but I think it can be done.
?What you need is three or four guys out there going for it ? it would just be a shame for someone to break four minutes and still finish second and get about $11,000 less than the winner.?
Thie, who first asked to be invited here after racing with 2002 champion Leonard Mucheru in New York, believes the Bermuda race is a superb start to any athlete?s season and would like to see more elite athletes join in the Mile.
He is happy to spread the word about the Island among the racing fraternity and doesn?t mind the extra competition that would bring him.
?Bermuda is such a great place,? added Thie, who also finished 28th in the 10K in 41.44.
?When you have nice weather, like we did on Sunday, it really is beautiful. The crowds are excellent and I think every athlete enjoys competing here.
?I?d just like to thank everyone for the support they have given me. And I hope to see you all again next year, if I am invited.?
