Fowler to make U-turn?

Shaun Goater was this morning undergoing a fitness test at Manchester City just hours before tonight's Premiership clash with Fulham.

The 32-year-old suffered a slight groin strain during training yesterday - a day which saw the Blues once again linked with a move for Leeds' striker Robbie Fowler.

According to , the biggest TV sports network in Britain, Fowler was set to do a U-turn and sign on at Maine Road just a fortnight after rejecting a deal at the 11th hour. said last night it understood a fee and terms had been agreed following two hours of talks with City boss Kevin Keegan yesterday after the club resurrected a deal.

The Leeds striker, left out of the squad that played Chelsea last night, turned down a ?7-million move amid claims City made a last-minute bid to change their method of payment for the striker.

Fowler felt the club's directors were not showing enough faith in his fitness, and opted to return to Elland Road, citing a desire to prove himself to the Leeds fans.

But the England frontman has apparently had a change of heart and will become a City player.

The transfer U-turn has ramifications across the Premiership as the Fowler funds will reportedly secure defender Jonathan Woodgate's place at Elland Road.

Leeds, desperate to raise cash in order to appease their bankers, were mulling over an offer from Newcastle for the ?10-million-rated defender that threatened to rip the club apart.

Leeds' boss Terry Venables said he would consider quitting if he saw one of the club's key men leave. However, he did confirm after his side's 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge that Fowler had talks yesterday with a view to moving on.

He told : "As far as I know there will be a decision tomorrow.

"My opinion is that I want to keep the players, I would like to keep all the players but we are not in a position to do that."Goater, whose future at City if Fowler does join is bound to be the subject of media speculation, was not letting the rumours distract his mission and is hopeful of partnering leading goalscorer Nicolas Anelka up front tonight despite the niggle sustained at the Carrington training ground yesterday morning.

"I had a slight twinge today (yesterday) in training and I have to go in at 8.30 a.m. tomorrow (today) to get treatment to see if I am alright to be involved," he told last night. "Steve Howey (City defender) tackled me after I had laid a ball off. He was running at me side on and as I laid it off he knocked my foot out to the side and I slightly tweaked my groin.

"It's not serious but because its only a day before you don't know. I am hoping I will be (involved). I have had it before and I think I'll be alright."
