Francis saves best for last

More than 80 bowlers turned up for the recent American Airlines Bowling Spectacular prizegiving with Millicent Francis stealing the spotlight.

Francis topped the handicap division finals, which earned her a round air trip, after games of 240, 258 and 272 for a 770 series.

This marked her best performance during the nine weeks of competition at Warwick Lanes as, in her own words, she ?saved the best for last?.

Damien Matthews, recently promoted from the junior ranks, placed second with a 734 series and also won an air ticket.

Cash prizes were paid to Renalda Bean (723), Clem Lespere (710), LeVinc Samuels (709), Dennis Trott (698), Patrice Tucker (696), David Abraham (695) and Vernon Daniels (694).

High game prize winners were Matthews and Francis (272), Lespere and Daniels (273), and Bean and Christopher Maycock (278).

Samuels, another bowler who has recently progressed from the junior ranks, took top honours in the scratch division. His games of 247, 218 and 214 were more than sufficient to top all others with a 679 series. He too received a round trip air ticket.

Samuels was followed by Matthews on 650 and Francis on 623. But the lucky player in this division was Daniels who placed fourth but still received an air ticket to the eastern seaboard of the US due to tournament rules that prevent any one person from winning more than one ticket.

Samuels and Maycock tied for high game with 247. Matthews rolled 244 and Daniels 247. All received cash prizes.

Also honoured during the evening was Marjorie Correia for her contribution over the years to the sport while tournament organiser Lionel Dowling announced that he would retire from the event after next year?s presentation.

Dowling designed the event and has been running it for the past 27 years.
