Freeman tops bill on Police fight card
Freeman Smith will take on American Dale Kile in the showcase bout as Police boxing returns to Bermuda.
The superheavyweight bout between Smith, who defeated Sharieff Wales in his last outing, and Massachusetts State officer Kile is one of 13 amateur male and female bouts due to take place at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel on Saturday, October 22.
A kickboxing event has also been added to the black tie programme as Boston and Massachusetts fighters jet in to take on the best of the local force.
Before the success of Fight Night, Police Boxing Section nights were the top pugilism events on the Island and that is a reputation they are looking to regain with a card featuring an array of experienced and green fighters.
The veteran Smith is well known on the boxing circuit here but he won?t be the only one going into the ring with plenty of experience.
Heavyweight Mike Halstead (Massachusetts State Police) has 20 bouts of experience under his belt and will go against the slightly less experienced Don VonLintel (6-9) of Denver PD while another Denver officer, Craig Feldmann (6-8), will try to overcome the experience of Greg DeFosse (Massachusetts) who has competed in over 25 bouts.
Leo (Lionheart) Richardson (Controversy Gym) who normally fights at 195-lbs in the heavyweight division will move up to the 200-lbs-plus super heavyweight division where his 3-2 record will provide him with an edge in experience over the heavier American Greg Spall (210-lbs, 1-1 record).
Ben Gray will also represent Bermuda against Denver in the heavyweight division, with Gray expected to have a five pounds weight advantage but his opponent, Ron Jensen, has an advantage in experience, having already boxed once before.
Jay Barnes (210-lbs, Police Gym) will also take on an opponent with a one-fight record when he meets Curt Vied (220-lbs) from the Massachusetts State Police.
Other bouts will see the Controversy Gym?s Nathan Sorentino enter the ring for the first time to take on Phil Donovan from Denver and teenage middleweights Kamel Dickenson (Police Gym) and Callon Burns (Controversy Gym) go head-to-head.
Female officers Caron Adderley and Shameen Iqbal will square off against each other as will Americans Christine Chavez of Denver and Gina Klay of Massachusetts).
And in another departure from the norm, kickboxers Garon Wilkinson and Reuben Bean will take on each other in a three-round contest.
Heavyweight Josh Smith (4-1) and middleweight Andre Bean (5-3) are currently without opponents after the British-based Birtley Boxing Club pulled out of the event, although the search is still on to find American opposition for the local fighters.
Tickets cost $50 and can be purchased online at www.boxoffice.bm or by calling 777-0219.
