Gades march on in defence of title
Renegades continued their defence of the Bermuda Rugby Football Union First Division title on Saturday with a comprehensive win over second-placed Teachers.
The league leaders dominated in the loose from the outset but it was a fine individual effort from skipper Tom Healey which got them on the board minutes after the opening whistle.
The scrum half fielded a Teachers kick in his own 22 and set off on a dazzling run that left would-be Teacher tacklers in his wake for the length of the field.
Five yards out from the goal-line, Healey popped the ball to supporting flanker Rod Stewart who scored.
Teachers applied their own pressure and replied immediately with Bobby Hurdle crashing over the line after miscommunication among the Renegades backs left them fumbling the ball following a Teachers kick.
With the scores tied, Renegades turned on the gas and left Teachers in the dust with a second and third try before the break, scored by Stewart and Greg Garside respectively.
Fly half John Hurst slotted one conversion into the strong wind blowing across Moresby Plain to leave the score 17-5 at the half.
A revitalised Teachers side returned to the field after the break and some strong runs up the middle by centre Chris Way saw the Reds threatening Renegades' goal-line on numerous occasions.
Other fine individual efforts in attack by scrum half David Porter and a far stronger performance from the Teachers forward pack went unrewarded, however, as Renegades' defence held firm for the final 40 minutes.
In the first match of the day between cellar dwellers Mariners and Police, the boys in blue came away with a 33-12 victory.
Jonathon Cassidy scored two tries while Adam Farrell, Michael Kane and Paul Marsden added one apiece for Police. Kane also kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Mariners, whose side were missing a large number of regular first team players, replied with a try from Jamie Evans and a try and a conversion from Mike Goode.
Meanwhile, second team action continued to heat up at BAA on Friday night with a vastly experienced Teachers side remaining unbeaten in league action under the lights.
Reds continued their string of fine performances with two far more closely fought encounters against Police and Renegades.
Patrick Cooper scored a try in each to give teachers a 5-0 win in both matches.
In women's action, Mariners Ladies defeated a select side of players from the other three clubs in a touch rugby match to open the evening's proceeedings.
This week sees more action at BAA, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, while Teachers and Police will square off at Moresby Plain in Dockyard on Saturday as Mariners look to end Renegades' unbeaten streak.
