Games `surprise' for Goater
When the Bermuda Olympic Association went looking for an attache for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games there really was only one person they could ask.
The event is being held in Manchester, England in July and so it was no surprise when BOA president John Hoskins sought the assistance of Manchester City striker Shaun Goater.
The only person that was surprised was Goater himself.
"When I found out the Commonwealth Games were here I never really thought about Bermuda having a team or the role of attache," he said from England yesterday. "I was just thinking the Commonwealth Games are in Manchester, I'm getting my tickets!"
As a result Goater and his wife Anita joined the tens of thousands of other fans in a lottery.
"You had to send in an application for tickets," said Goater. "So we said `well, if it's going to be a lottery we'd better send in two applications'.
"Funnily enough, for each application we were allocated the tickets we asked for. Now we have more than enough and we are probably going to have to give them away to my team-mates!"
Goater said being attache would be a great honour and he likened it to being his "World Cup".
However, there is just one problem that he is seeking to overcome.
"I would certainly like to take on the role but I still have to speak to my gaffer (Kevin Keegan) before I can give them confirmation," Goater said.
"We (Manchester City) are in Ireland on July 26 and the opening ceremony is on July 25, the same day the team leaves. I still have to get the OK from the gaffer, but, certainly, I'd like to join in and take part."
