Gibbons Jr. hits the ground running

Treadwell Gibbons Jr stroked a confident 43 runs in his debut match for Arbroath United Cricket Club against Strathmore Cricket Club in Tayside, Scotland on Sunday.

Gibbons featured in an opening stand worth 35 runs with fellow opener Darren Spink (14) to help propel Arbroath to a 50-run victory over Strathmore in this 40 over pre-season friendly.

Gibbons smashed three boundaries and appeared destined for a big knock until his innings ended abruptly when he was bowled attempting to sweep down the leg-side, the ball coming off his gloves and disturbing the bails.

According to Arbroath vice president Clarence Parfitt, the Western Stars left-handed opener has settled down comfortably in his new surroundings and is scheduled to resume training today in preparation for Saturday?s league match against Fort Hill Cricket Club ? postponed last Saturday due to heavy rain ? in Dundee.

?Treadwell (Gibbons) looked really good on his first time batting out on the square,? the legendary bowler told . ?He listened to the advice I gave him, adjusted to the pace of the wicket and was looking very good.

?He batted quite well and was unfortunate to get out trying to sneak one around the corner. The ball came off his glove over his hip and knocked the bail off.?

Gibbons, 19, is scheduled to practise over the next three days before returning out in the middle with Arbroath?s second team in a league match against Fort Hill CC.

Parfitt added: ?It was very cold (48F) and he (Gibbons) said it was the coldest conditions he has ever played in. But the boys at the club like him and he has blended in nicely with them.

?We have a young team and all of the players are around his age. Everyone has got on well and are very happy with him. He?s trained just about every day since he arrived (last Thursday) and all the players are looking after him.?

Arbroath hit180 for five with Strathmore managing 130 for eight in reply.
