Goal-happy Goater grabs two more

While Shaun Goater is scoring goals for fun, fellow Bermudian striker Kyle Lightbourne would settle for just one strike hitting the back of the net.

The contrasting fortunes of the Island pair were illustrated again at the weekend when they turned out for their clubs Manchester City and Macclesfield Town respectively.

City continued their fine home form by beating First Division promotion rivals Birmingham City 3-0, Goater netting a pair.

Meanwhile, Macclesfield drew 0-0 at home to big spending Hull City in the Third Division, Lightbourne unlucky not to open his account with the best chance of the game.

City went a goal up in the 23rd minute at Maine Road when Goater was in the right place at the right time to turn the ball home.

New signing Ali Bernabia raced into the box and squared to Paulo Wanchope. The Costa Rican had little room in which to move but managed to squeeze a shot goalwards that beat goalkeeper Alan Kelly's mad scramble but hit the post.

Goater reacted first and nudged the ball over the line for his eighth goal of what is fast becoming a fantastic season.

Two minutes later City were 2-0 up when Richard Dunne volleyed his first goal in English League football.

Goater spurned another chance before he sealed City's victory before the first half was over.

A 42nd minute corner from Stuart Pearce was flicked on by a Birmingham player and Goater made no mistake from six yards out.

At Macclesfield, the home side weathered an early storm from Hull before fashioning an opening of their own.

Kevin Keen whipped in a cross and Lightbourne rose to direct the ball in the direction of the goal. But it lacked the necessary power and didn't trouble 'keeper Matt Glennon.

The game continued to ebb and flow but in the dying minutes the home side and the Bermudian had a chance to grab the three points.

Lightbourne unleashed a powerful shot but as it seemed destined to hit the back of the net it was deflected wide and out of harm's way.
