Goal-happy Swallows sound title warning
Swallows sent out a clarion call in the Women's B league last weekend that they fully intend to repeat as champions.
The team stormed to a decisive 5-0 victory over Ravens on Sunday to maintain their undefeated record.
Last year's leading scorer Jenny Burrell set her squad on fast-forward to victory within the first minute of play when she powered her first goal past the Ravens ‘keeper.
Rather than relaxing the pace in the aftermath of the early zinger, Burrell re-appeared at the net for a second strike in the fourth minute.
Team-mates Kim Stevens and Karen Campbell stepped up to increase Swallows' lead to 4-0 before the half.
But the runaway winners were not finished at the net yet.
Annaka Rubidge, who had previously hit the crossbar, took another shot in the second half which found its mark before the team sat back.
It was a demoralising result for Ravens who suffered a 7-0 loss to Cardinals the previous weekend. The sophomore squad will be hoping for better luck against Canaries this weekend.
In other B league action, Canaries continued to demonstrate their strength this year in taking out Swifts 1-0.
The match was just starting to take shape when Canaries found the back of the net in the tenth minute for the winning goal.
While Swifts pressed hard for an equaliser, with Ashley Gillis and Amy Smith working in tandem, a save from the Canaries ‘keeper kept the score intact.
Swifts had a final chance when they were awarded a penalty stroke but failed to capitalise and were forced to accept the loss.
In the only other B meeting, Bluebirds fell to the experienced Orioles 1-0.
The Blues A team had a more successful day on the Warwick Academy pitch last Sunday, however, as they notched a 6-0 victory over Orioles.
Swallows held on to their A dominance as well with a 1-0 result despite a good fight by Ravens.
The match's only goal came early in the half when Dianne Moore found the target for Swallows. Ravens pressed for a draw but strong defending from Liz Osborne and Sarah Davies kept them from taking any points from the match.
In the last A game of the weekend, Swifts took an early lead against Canaries but could not hold on and conceded four goals to go down 4-1.
Swifts started brightly with pressure at the net from Clemmie Stubbs, Jennifer Beech and Lucy Hollis.
The pressure paid off as Hollis neatly put in a long corner cross from Beech at the left post. But Canaries tied the game up two minutes before the half with a powerful direct shot from a penalty corner.
Canaries came back from the break to add three more to their tally and walk away with a comfortable win.
Just two Men's League matches took place with Rebels and Upstarts sharing the points in a 1-1 draw and Police Polecats taking a 1-0 win over BCS Panthers.
Rebels and Upstarts are tied for second in the league and their match was as open a game as seen this season.
Both sides spent most of the first half playing counter attack. After the break, Upstarts found their way through the Rebels defence only to be stopped by Mike Smith in goal.
Rebels soon found their mark, however, with John Richmond sliding the ball past Upstarts Mike Foster for the go-ahead goal.
Hard work from Upstarts was rewarded when John Uprichard was fouled in the area by Mark Wheddon for a penalty stroke.
Neil Carroll stepped to the spot and tied the game minutes before the final whistle.
