Goater again!

Manchester City's Shaun Goater (hidden) is mobbed by team-mates after heading home a late equaliser with his first touch of the ball during yesterday's Premier League derby clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Shaun Goater sent one half of Manchester wild yesterday when he grabbed a point with his first touch in the Old Trafford derby.

The Manchester City striker did in one second what the man who replaced him in the starting line-up, ?6-million buy Robbie Fowler, could not for 85 minutes - hit the back of the Manchester United net.

Sent on with Ali Bernabia to take over from the new signing and Eyal Berkovic with City 1-0 down in the 85th minute, Goater planted a header from a Shaun Wright-Phillips lob into the back of the net just nine seconds after entering the field of play to send the Blues' fans wild.

It's believed to be the fastest Premier League goal ever scored by a substitute.

And the 32-year-old Bermudian could have grabbed all three points in added time when he swept home Nicolas Anelka's pass only for the Frenchman to be penalised for an innocuous handball.

The goal justified Goater's boast that he was going to push Fowler all the way for a place in the City side, and meant he has scored three goals in two games against the Red Devils this season, having scored twice in the 3-1 win at Maine Road.

"It's a derby, you can see from our fans that it means everything," said Goater when interviewed by Sky Sports after the game, which was televised live in the UK and in Bermuda.

City went a goal down early in the first half when Ruud Van Nistelrooy scored from close range after Ryan Giggs had picked him out with a perfect low cross to the far post.

And Kevin Keegan's men had to soak up intense pressure from Alex Ferguson's title hopefuls for much of the game after that.

Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham all had opportunities, but City hung on, growing stronger throughout the second period.

With the clock ticking down though it looked as if the three points would be going to the Reds. That was until City boss Kevin Keegan made his inspired substitutions and Goater once again became the City hero.

Keegan said afterwards: "We had to try something. We were getting a foothold in the game without threatening enough.

"In Ali (Benarbia) we've got invention, Shaun got his 100th goal against United and has now scored again today. Having been here as a kid he'll have enjoyed that.

"It's luck but you need it sometimes - especially at places like this. As the game wore on I thought we got more and more into it. We may have sneaked three points at the end."

City are now tenth in the Premiership on 38 points from 27 games, five behind Liverpool who occupy the last European spot in sixth.

The draw, meanwhile, means United missed the chance to close in on leaders Arsenal who drew 1-1 with Newcastle United later in the day.

Goater has now scored seven goals for City this season and is City's joint second top scorer, equal with Marc-Vivien Foe and behind the ever present Anelka who has 11.
