Goater back on our screens?

The days of Manchester City and Shaun Goater appearing on Bermudian television screens could be set for a one-off return.

The Bermudian striker's new club Reading are taking on the blues on Monday, August 2 in a pre-season friendly and Goater is pulling out the stops to get the beamed back to the Island.

The game, Reading's last before they mount their Division One campaign, is the result of a clause built into Goater's contract when he left Maine Road that City would take on his new club in a friendly.

After much to-ing and fro-ing, a date has finally been set much to Goater's delight.

“I am trying to use my connections while I am here to try and get the game put on television in Bermuda,” said Goater, back on the Island for national team training ahead of the El Salvador World Cup qualifier as well as to run his Grassroots Soccer Festival next week.

“It would be good for the City fans on the Island to see this warm-up game and it should be a good match, coming so close to the beginning of the season for both clubs.

“I think it is something that is possible and even if it doesn't make it on to the screens, it certainly won't be for the lack of trying.”

The game at the Madejski Stadium, which kicks off at 8 p.m., comes six days before Reading's season and two weeks before City's campaign.

“Division One clubs always want to play a Premiership side just before the season starts. Manchester City are a big team with big names and should attract people to come out and see them.

“We can also gauge ourselves against good opposition - it will also be nice to see a few old faces and wind them up a bit.”

The match will also be a chance to raise some further funds for Goater's football programmes here.”
