Goater goal query
Soccer statisticians are at odds as to just how many goals Bermudian striker Shaun Goater has scored for Manchester City.
Goater (32), who was part of a League Cup shock last night when Premiership City were beaten 1-0 by Second Division Wigan, thought he was on the verge of netting 100 goals for City after he scored the winner in the 2-1 triumph over West Brom at the weekend.
That goal he believed was his 99th in his four-year career at Maine Road.
But the figures at the English Football Association are at odds with that total and show he has scored 98.
The apparent mix-up stems from a goal which Goater claimed to have scored against West Ham at Maine Road two seasons ago.
The FA's dubious goals committee subsequently ruled the strike was deflected by the Hammers' Ian Pearce and as a result it was credited as an own goal.
Goater, however, is pragmatic about the mathematical mix-up.
"I will just have to score two goals in the next couple of games," he said.
