Goater helps the Shrimpers to 4-2 victory

Shaun Goater returned to his old club Rotherham on Saturday and helped Southend come away with a victory that moves them up to second place in League One.

The Shrimpers, promoted last year, took the lead through Mark Bentley after 18 minutes and Adam Barrett. The Millers came back through goals from Colin Murdock and Deon Burton.

But super-sub Wayne Gray came off the bench to score in the 84th minute before reclaiming penalty-taking duties from The Goat two minutes later and sealing the victory in front of just over 4,000 fans.

Goater, who started the game with teenager James Lawson in attack, once again played the full 90 minutes.

Khano Smith, meanwhile, was an unused sub as the New England Revolution secured a place in the play-offs with a 1-0 victory over the NY/NJ Metrostars at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night.
